10 things we like this Christmas

10 gifts most people would like to receive this Christmas, based on research

GONE are the years when we would hang our letters to St. Nick on our Christmas trees. The jolly old guy in a red suit has long skipped our homes from his holiday itinerary. It may be against humanity’s code of ethics to demand from our loved ones and friends what we want to get from them, but there’s no harm in making a wish list this Christmas.

Surely, each of us could come up with a kilometric catalogue, with hopes that some people would take hints of our cravings. Zup asked young people around to whip up this special Yuletide wish list.

Techie Stuff. This could range from the laptops to the flash discs and card readers. Most of them are quite expensive, so it’s not surprising when many are not so keen on buying them as gifts. Of course there’s a valid excuse: school and office work is a breeze with some of these cool contraptions.

New Wardrobe. For some, Christmas and New Year is a perfect time to hang something new in the closet. After years of juggling 10 shirts and three pairs of jeans (your classmates may have memorized the clothes you own), now is the time get a new outfit.

Flip-Flops. Not only are they in, they’re comfy, stylish, and practical. You don’t need to rush spending for the branded ones that’ll turn you into a financial flip. To choose a killer flop, just make sure you get both quality and style marked on your check list. Once you’ve found the flip flops that make Chuck Taylors weep, do some research in your friend’s shoe rack and find out his or her size.

Gift Checks. You can’t go wrong with this one. All you need to know is where your friend loves to shop or dine the most. Shoes? Fine Italian? Pair your lovin’ with a gift check from a perfect boutique or resto.

MP3 Player. Even if you can’t sing or dance to save your life, you gotta admit music’s got a lot to do with our everyday life. So if you can, get your loved one an MP3 player! Prices range from about P900 to P3,000. If you’re feeling like Richie Rich, get an IPOD. That’s some lucky friend you have there.

A chocolate body wrap for the girlfriends. If chocolate is a woman’s best friend (more affordable than diamonds, that is), then imagine being immersed in thick brown sugary bliss! Hunt for spas that offer a body massage or body bath using chocolate. They may offer packages this Christmas; go get your lady friend a certificate! She’ll hug you for giving her the sweetest Christmas gift ever.

A poetry CD. To hear the soothing and surprising rhythms of sound spoken, unsung, with music only offstage–this the gift a young woman would appreciate. Tune up the evocative atmosphere of the holidays with a gift of a poetry CD. Look up the poetry of Pablo Neruda, T.S. Elliot or find some jazz poems.

Something made. Girls just dig “personalized” stuff–something that’s been made with an investment of time, creativity and wackiness. Why not make your friend a scrapbook of your barkada trips, or of the past four years of college or high school life? Or if she is such a cluttered creature, decorate that dream cork board she’s been longing to put up in her room.

A page-turner. If your friend is a reader, then a book will never fail. If she loves absurdities and lyricism, try “Love in the Time of Cholera” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (because it’s been made into a movie and will be shown here soon!). If she’s safe with strangeness and philosophy, get her “The Famished Road” by Ben Okri. To nourish her independent spirit, get her Teresa Rodriguez Williamson’s “Fly Solo: The 50 Best Places On Earth For a Girl to Travel Alone.” It’s a chic book that includes quizzes and lots of information to suit every type of lady traveller’s wants and needs.

The Blings. Shining, shimmering accessories like earrings, bracelets and necklaces are favorites, especially among the girls. Oh well, you could count some on the distaff side too. For most of them, it’s the accessory that cane make or break the getup, whether they’re in their school uniform or a relaxed outfit for a weekend adventure.

These are just some of the things that would give every young person a merry Christmas. Happy shopping and happy holidays!
