La Niña intensifies, at least 1 tough cyclone expected in December
With the La Niña weather phenomenon in the Philippines having intensified, the country can expect at least one more tough cyclone to batter and bring landslides to the Philippines this December.
Science undersecretary Graciano Yumul Jr. cited information from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) indicating La Niña in the Philippines had heightened from light to moderate.
“The chances of rains in the Philippines are stronger and are conducive to tropical cyclone development. In December we expect at least one tropical cyclone,” he told President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at a National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) meeting in Camp Aguinaldo Friday evening.
He also said landslides will be a “big problem” as the next tropical cyclones after “Mina” will likely make landfall and pass through provinces.
“The last-quarter battering of the Philippines (will bring) so much rain and flooding, landslides would actually be a big problem,” Yumul said.
Also, Yumul warned residents in Bicol who were reportedly irritated that rains to be brought by “Mina” had not yet come to be more careful as the rains will be much heavier.
He said that while “Mina” is virtually stationary at sea, it continues to gain strength.
“Mas devastating ang effects (The effects will be much more devastating),” he said.- GMANews.TV
